What’s a simple thing you could do to save money, but are unwilling (or unable) to put to practice?
Sponsored by Microsoft Small Business. To never again buy anything from Microsoft. Many people are currently unable to do this because the place where they work uses Windows, Office, and Outlook. But it is becoming easier as better, cheaper (often free), and easier to use software (which doesn't crash as often) moves to the web (which I guess is one reason why Microsoft Small Business is sponsoring this question and Microsoft is spending lots of money on really stupid ads with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld who didn't need to sell his Mac soul - he has enough money).
What's the best music documentary or concert film you've seen?
There are many excellent films, but the best is still Stop Making Sense. I saw it when I was in high
school when it was first released, showed it several times in college, and own the DVD.
What were the sports or games you played in high school or college?
Submitted by Stephen.
I ran track in 8th grade (sprints and relay), but didn't continue in 9th grade because I didn't like the coach.
I played too many video games, computer games, and role playing games.
What sites show up if you type "S" into your browser's address bar?
sfist, sfgate, sfbay.craigslist.org, sfusualsuspects, sfindie, sfmoma, sfprogress.blip.tv, salon, sfbg, sfwar.org, sffs.org, soex.org, sfnan.org ... (to be extended and linked to later)
How many times do you usually re-edit posts? What is the most common reason for doing so?
Submitted by Mr. Guilt.
I often re-edit posts, find more links, post more photos, update them. That is one of the best things about the web.
But it is harder with vox because I often cross-post on my typepad blog and updates aren't reflected there (so I have to edit that post as well).
How well does your name Google? Who are you up against? (Celebrities, etc.)
Submitted by Matt Blank.
Pretty well. As I mentioned here, there are a lot of people named Steve Rhodes. But currently, my flickr profile is the top result, then my typepad blog, and my home page (which I haven't updated in years), and original blogger blog are on the first page. This blog is towards the top of the second page.
When skimming a magazine (or book or newspaper) do you flip through the pages from front to back or back to front?
Submitted by enSue.
Usually from front to back, but I'll also often
look at the table of contents and go directly to an article.
What's something you should throw away, but can't?
The list is way too long. Many newspapers, magazines, and books (though I'd give those away). Lots
of VHS tapes once I transfer them to DVD.
Who was your first celebrity crush?
Submitted by Glory.
I never really had celebrity crushes. I knew there was no chance of actually having
a romantic relationship with a celebrity.
But I did have crushes on characters in books I guess because they were part of my imagination.
Do you buy products made locally? Is there anything made in your area that you love?
I buy things made locally when I can.
Mitchell's Ice Cream (and now Bi-Rite Creamery) and Lucca Ravioli are great. So are farmer's markets and community supported agriculture.
I also shop at local merchants when I can (which means please don't buy from any of the amazon links here - go to a local bookstore - a recent LA Times article focused on bookstores closing in the bay area).
