Everyone should read Everything that Rises: A Book of Convergences by Lawrence Weschler (more photos). Actually, they should read everything by Weschler.
When I have more time, I'll write a post with lots of links on him (and update his rather sparse wikipedia entry - there is a bio and some older links here. lawrenceweschler.net currently just seems to have a painting of him). There is video of a speech he gave at UC Berkeley in 2004.
The 2007 Chicago Humanities Festival (where he is the artistic director) will be on A Climate of Concern and take place October 27 to November 11th.

I wrote a story back in 1995, My So Called Modem, on fan communities online which focused on one of the first online groups formed to try to save a tv show (one that was actually worth saving).

Michael Patterson was hired to do the animation for this after his short film the Commuter was seen on the Z Channel. The documentary on it is great, but it doesn't go into the shorts it ran (HBO and Showtime also showed shorts back in the 80s). PictureStart, an independent film distribution company where I interned during college placed the Commuter on the Z Channel.
Another great music video, And She Was, was made by Jim Blashfield for the Talking Heads. Blashfield used color xerox cut out animation for this and other music videos as well as his amazing short films (a couple are now on DVD including Suspicious Circumstances which PictureStart also distributed as well as the short films of Gus Van Sant who took photographs used in And She Was).
